virtual tape machine

"Bringing comprehensive control of tapeless recorders to SSL operators … (they) will love this box. It does exactly what it is supposed to, transparently and reliably. Bottom line? All SSL owners need one. Now!"
- George Shilling, Engineer/Journalist

"It just works! Plug it in and off you go - it's that straightforward!".

The Whizzer is already a proven and cost-effective solution in use in studios worldwide.
There's only one problem with the Whizzer, it doesn't publicise itself enough for us. It's so transparent that most users are not even aware that it's there!

There are still many studios/engineers who, in order to run the SSL mix automation computer, control their audio workstations and hard disc recorders from the console via timecode playing off a mechanical tape machine. This ("master"), with all its inherent idiosyncrasies and problems; prolonged wind times, spooling-off, tape wear, and (if not well maintained) even inconsistent speed, is wasted real estate, and generates unwanted extra heat and background noise!

This practice defeats the object of progressing from tape to new recording technologies. Much of the benefit of a tapeless system, including productivity, is lost; it's clumsy and completely unnecessary.

Instead, imagine a machine running 24 hours of perfect code (of any standard), which suffers none of those shortcomings, and locates almost instantaneously but with the feel of a conventional tape recorder. Furthermore, it only takes up a single unit in your machine or DAW rack.

The Whizzer provides transport control from the mix automation computer on SSL consoles over any device which can chase timecode, which otherwise could not be directly connected to. To "wind" back to the beginning of a 5 minute song, an autolocate takes only 3 seconds.

The Whizzer also includes a very simple and practical varispeed feature. (Note: SSL introduced a virtual machine solution on its J Series desks, however this cannot varispeed.)

All front panel toggles are wired to a rear 9-pin D-connector, allowing for any to be wired of to a remote switch (eg. on the centre section of the console).

The product is so much better than the name…
