The Whizzer is a true "virtual machine", able to control any device that can chase timecode (LTC or MTC).
The Whizzer interfaces to the SSL E/G-Series machine control output, and feeds location data back to the console mix automation system.
The Whizzer controls are thankfully minimal and straightforward; the few toggle switches and status LEDs make the setup effortless.

Problem: The E/G/G+ Series mix computer operating on SSL SL4/6/8000 consoles uses switch/relay closures to control the master recorder's transport, and reads timecode back off tape to lock the automation. However, the computer also requires tach pulses and direction information to follow the machine position as the autolocator can't read LTC during fast wind. This is all achieved via an SSL parallel connection (S29E) commonly employed on traditional multitrack tape recorders. This protocol is normally omitted from contemporary tapeless and videotape-based devices, which generally incorporate high speed serial connection protocols instead.

Solution: The Whizzer directly interfaces to the SSL E/G-Series parallel machine control connection, takes commands from the console's transport keys and provides switch tallies in return. It also produces the required timecode, tach and direction signals.

With a built-in timecode generator, internally crystal referenced or resolved to an external video signal, The Whizzer is a true "Virtual Machine", able to control any device that can chase timecode (be that LTC or MTC). All common audio frame rates are supported.

Additionally, The Whizzer can be employed as a frame rate converter, as it will output a different frame rate from the incoming signal.

The Whizzer features:
Motion control of computer - and videotape-based systems from SSL SL4/6/8000 E/G/G+/SE Series console's transport keys
Full transport tally feedback to confirm switch states
Tach and direction signal in play and locate/wind, providing positional data to control console automation
Varispeed function (unavailable on SL9000J and Sony P2 based protocol converters)
Stationary LTC bursts issued in stop position to locate tape based transports
Consistent and fast response to transport commands with "natural feel" ballistics
Video locked linear timecode (LTC) output to control slave device
Video locked MIDI timecode (MTC) output to control slave device
SSL transport commands transmitted as full MIDI Machine Commands - switchable
Auto-detected external video reference signal format
Clear front panel status LEDs indicate setup and condition
Rear connection port for full remote control of front panel switches
Balanced jack socket outputs linear timecode at -10dB
